Were you the one who was just having problems with "missing motor oil"?
Maybe the two are related? You know, bad engine sound.....no oil......hhmmm......

i had a rattling noise from my engine around 3k also.....the technican at Toyota said that it was a carbon buildup, i had the shortblock, oilpump, piston rings, and i think some other parts replaced under warranty.

well, i had to wait two weeks to get my car into the shop. They said by the end of the week, but when the end of the week came, they had not even looked at my car. Great Toyota customer service for ya. Being at school, it was a hassle to get rides to the dealer to check on my car, so i bit**ed out the service manager and ended up with a camry as a loaner. If i remember correctly, it took about two weeks.
Everything was covered under warranty, my bill was almost three pages long with parts listings.

You're under the 60K powertran warranty?? I'd assume that this would be covered.

mine was covered under the 60,000 powerterain warranty. my celi had 38k when this happened.
One thing i suggest to you is that you be forceful, and not just let them tell you what their going to do. Thats what i did.
An easy way to see if its from the engine (this is what the technicians said the did), is to run the engine w/o the belts in neutral, and see if it makes the rattle still, then it is from the engine. (i was in the toyota shop 3 weeks earlier for my belt tensioner so they were making sure it wasnt that).
Good luck man
edit: Also, if one dealership does nothing...go to the next

This seems to be happening to me along with a lot of other people, but only when the AC is on, or has been on for a while. Nothing to worry about, at least that's what I've been told. Appearently it's fairly common among Celicas, and it kind of makes the same noise as when you engine brake in low gears.

I have a rattling now too. I have to tape a bunch of stuff down that is not fastened, but Iam afraid that I will still be hearing the rattle after I tape everything down. I guess mine might be next in line with this problem.

It HAS to have something to do with the AC. That has to be why so many people are now just complaining about it now during the summer.
The noise still persists after the AC has been turned off after it has been on for a while, so it might have something to do with the pressure lines going to the compressor, or something to do with excessive heat.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with the pressure lines though, perhaps they rattle under certain conditions. This is just a guess, but I'm almost positive that the noise is tied into the AC somehow.
I'll try to run some tests this weekend, but most likely next weekend.

I haven't really been running the AC lately though. When I do run it I notice that my steering wheel shakes while at idle. I flipped the AC off and it stopped, then I flipped it back on and the shaking started right away, so I know what you are getting at.

Well without hearing it myself, I can't say what you're hearing. There is a wierd sound that the car can make, right when you start it up and if you hold the idle constant around 2000 rpm...more like a crackle sound. That sound means you have air in the cooling system and you need to bleed it.

Question...
When you turn on your AC, does engine coolant flow at all into the AC compressor? Could operation of the AC be causing air to get into the engine coolant when it circulates into the AC compressor, if it even does? Or does only the left fan cool the compressor?
Reason I am asking is because I was looking in the repair manuals last night, and it says that if you hear a metallic sound emit from the AC compressor during operation, you should replace the compressor, for it or the magnetic clutch may be defective. Could the compressor somehow let air into the coolant?

No the AC would have nothing to do with the sound I'm describing and no coolant does not pass through the AC compressor.

well, mines in the shop since last friday and they did the same to me too but if it's under warranty then they don't charge the 75 to "inspect" it. my car was rattling, like a loose valve or something....

did the dealership tell you that or someone else? listen to a new car. any sound that you hear onyour car that you don't hear on a new one is something to worry about until you figure out what it is and fix it

did anyone other than the muffler shop look at the exhaust? take it somewhere like firestone where they won't make any money to fix it and see what they say

I got a 2001 GT with 30,000 miles on it about 3 weeks ago and checked the oil a couple days after I got it to make sure everything was still ok and it was right up to the full mark on the dipstick. Today I was out cruisin with my gf (1500 miles after I checked the oil that day) and was comin up to a 90 degree turn so I shift from 4th to 3rd and then 3rd to 2nd as I entered the turn then comin out I got back on it and there was a tapping sound, I was just like wtf, upshift to 3rd and it was still doing it, pushed the clutch in again and it stalled, I knew right then there was something majorly wrong. Pulled off onto a dirt road a little ways away and popped the hood, nothin smokin or leakin up top, looked underneath and no puddles or drips. Checked the oil and there wasn't even any on the dipstick...I had to add 3 quarts to get it to full !!!! It still knocked after adding oil, starts about 2000-2500 rpm and I don't wanna rev any higher than that to see if it still does it any higher, lol
Mine sounds like a main bearing but I don't really know what all the different knocking sounds mean, I just think it sounds like my Beretta did when the main bearing went, still under warranty so I'm gonna get a hold of the local Toyota dealership and see about gettin it in, I'll update asap
Oh and let me also add that there was NO low oil light or any warning that my oil was THAT low, I miss having gauges in cars, like oil pressure and voltmeter. Never expected a newer car with only 30,000 miles would burn 3 quarts of oil in 1500 miles, that's just not right

3qts in 1500 miles is BAD. Something was completely wrong and it has nothing to do with your VVTL-i system. The only thing I can think of is the breather system is hooked up incorrectly of something is stuck that is creating a constant vacuum and pulling all the oil from the top end of the engine. Dude, you would almost see 3qts of oil every 1500 too. Thats about a quart every 500 miles or every fill up. That is just wrong.
You can put the car in gear and see if it goes away with a slight load. Give the car a touch of gas and hold the brake down while in gear (side step the clutch at the same time or use the e-brake). If it goes away under load, then it's a main bearing. If it stays constant, then it's a rod.

Had it towed to the nearest Toyota dealership yesterday and they called today after listening to it and said it sounds like rod bearings and that they're just gonna throw a new shortblock in it and whatever else it needs, said they ordered everything, it should be done next Tuesday or Wednesday depending on when the parts get there, of course all covered under warranty *thanks some random deity*
