Gear Oil and Transmission fluid, Whats the difference?

I have a serious question. As I am rather new to this, I was wondering if Gear oil and Transmission fluid are the same thing? From the research I've done, they go in the same place, so would it matter if i used one or the other say on a '01 Celia GT-S 6 speed manual. I am very confused on this topic.

I've looked around more and have seen a few people say royal purple was a good oil specifically the 75w90 mentioned above . This is where i get confused. some people give the okay and others say No. I'll look around for more info

Use Redline Lighweight Shockproof gear oil. Skip the Royal Purple for the manual transmission on our cars.

Royal purple and Mobil 1 eats thru our synchros from what I read, I know when I was using Mobil 1 my gears started grinding every now and then, when I switched to redline the grind was gone

You have to be careful with the version of Royal Purple gear oil you get. They put a limited slip additive in some of them and that will wreak havoc in a manual transmission.
