Depending on your skill and/or determination, anywhere from an hour to 3 hours.

I highly reccomend that you really organize whatever you remove. Take pictures of where things go or list them down - it'll be very helpful when trying to put everything back in.

The steering wheel itself or the plastics around the steering column? If you can do it without taking off the plastics, more power to you. I scratched mine trying to get the dash off, so I took it off.

Interesting color combo. I've got blue and black. There should be some pics in my gallery, like the 3rd or 4th page.

Hurry up already!

Oh wait, you're sanding it down, huh? Hardcore stuff.

^no i dont think so. u may be able to slide the wires back there from the side. just try pulling back the plastic a bit if u can. i havent tried that so im not 100% sure, but i dont see why not. the only obstacle i see is the clips holding the dash to the frame which are pretty close to the side ends.

For painting the airbag area, the airbag itself will not be removed/deployed right? I'm hoping you disconnect power, and you will be able to remove it?

no, the airbag will not be deployed as long as youre careful with it (meaning dont throw it around after its out of the car lol). just make sure to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for a few minutes before unplugging the wire harness that leads to the airbag. the whole airbag assembly cosists of what is pictured in the bottom right corner with the white panel that is masked off in the bottom (i dont have a picture that really shows the airbag assembly well enough):

i tried to find a way to remove the plastic panel over it, but it seems like its part of the whole assembly and cant be removed, so i just masked it off.

It goes to the flap above the cabin air filter compartment. I don't have a picture, but it's not that hard to miss. Just follow the cable and you'll see it.

The first picture you attached looks like it might be the daylight sensor (I'm not sure what the technical name is) which is the red plastic circle closest to the windshield ontop of the dash where the steering wheel is. The second picture I am not too sure about, but it looks like it could be an LED for a security light... probably the one in the background of the same picture. Not certain on that one, though.

If the wires are OEM, stretch them to see how far they can go an search around the area where the wires end for any open plugs. Typically, car manufacturers like to really cut the wires down to size to save on money for mass production so the ends of the wires shouldn't be too far away from where they have to go once stretched - just make sure not to OVER stretch or else you will really have problems...

Hmm... the link that cream posted on post #30 had the same write up, but now that's down for the count as well. Luckily, I have scans of the original pictures that I printed out when the write up was still active, so I'll re-make the write up and post it on here when I'm done. I should have it up by later tonight if I can. Hopefully it can replace the first post since it's kind of useless now

Yep. I didn't have to loosen up my wiring harness loom where the center console is, though. That stayed put on the support beam even after I took off the dash.

Alright, here is the revised guide. Bare with me as these are scanned pictures from a print out from the original. I cropped out the pictures and re-wrote the actual write up on MS Word with the addition of a few grammatical/spelling corrections and a few little extra tips... so I have that file for those who need it. Sticky this maybe?

Detailed Dash Removal Guide

This guide has been reformatted. I take no credit for this.

1. First, remove the center console. This can be done by first pulling up on the shifter surrounding plastic and disconnecting the connector that hooks ups to the cigarette lighter. If you have an automatic, shift into neutral to make things easier to pull up. Then, proceed to removing the surrounding plastic around the radio head unit. To do so, pull off the AC control knobs and unscrew the two screws under the big knobs. Then, just pull the plastic surround off towards the back of the car carefully as to not break the tabs. Make sure to disconnect the clock before pulling it completely out. After that, there will be one screw on each side of the center console (right-most red arrow in the picture above) connecting to the shifter’s internal frame. Then there are two 10mm bolts under the carpet inside the armrest box. Pry up the carpet with a flathead screwdriver and you will see the bolts clearly.

2. Remove all the lower panels on both passenger and driver sides as well as the hood opening device – lift up the handle to remove the two screws under. All of these are pretty straight forward.

3. After you have the lower panels removed, you should remove the AC controls. There are 3 metal wires hat run from the AC controls, two from the driver’s side and one from the passenger’s side. Pop them out from the holders and then slide the end of it off of the plastic rod. The pictures above show the driver’s side in the first two and the passenger’s side in the last picture.

4. Remove the AC controls by popping it out of the dash. It’s held in by two visible clamps – one on the right and another on the left. Disconnect the corresponding wire plugs and pull it out completely. Then, remove the four bolts holding the stereo to the dashboard and unplug the wiring harness, antenna, etc.

5. On the driver’s side, remove the two bolts connecting the metal plate shown above.

6. Remove the light sensor that is located at the very front of the dash closest to the heat shield. You just simply unclip the wire connector.

7. Remove all the screws holding wires to the dash. Also, if you have a security, it’ll look like the thing circled in red above. Merely remove the foam that is wrapped around the connectors and underneath, there will be two connectors – one blue and one yellow. Simply unclip these.

8. Remove the bolt shown above.

9. Unclip (but don’t unscrew) the two connectors shown above.

10. There is a bolt holding the wires to the dash shown in the picture above. Remove the bolt by putting a screw driver through the top hole circled above.

11. Moving on to the passenger side, remove the bolts shown above.

Note: There is one bolt holding the wiring harness to the dash that is not photographed because it’s impossible to get the camera in to take a picture of. It is right beside the radio behind the dash on the passenger side. This was the hardest screw for me to remove (I didn’t even bother to put it back on when I re-assembled the dash).

12. Remove the airbag. To do so, disconnect the battery and wait a minute. The airbag is held on by a 12mm bolt in the front (very easy to see) and 2 nuts, one on each side of the airbag.

13. Remove the 4 bolts holding the dash on. They are located on the areas where the doors meet the dash. Open the doors and you will see two bolt covers on each side of the dash. Pop off the covers with a flathead screwdriver.

14. Remove the gauge cluster. There are two screws under the top portion of the surrounding trim plastic. Pull that off and there will be 3 visible screws holding on the gauge cluster in place. Pull it forward and unplug the two connectors behind the gauge cluster.

15. Remove the nut behind the gauge cluster as pictured above.

16. By now, all the bolts, screws, and nuts holding the dash to the wires and the steel frame will have been removed. Next and final step, remove the wires from the plastic clips that are holding them to the dash. In the picture above, behind the gauge cluster are two of these clips. Use two flathead screwdrivers to unclip each one of these. On the top, pull the clip towards you while pulling down from underneath on the plastic strap. Do this to both.

17. Under the airbag, there are two clips similar to the ones above, but to remove these, push down on the top of them and push them toward the engine bay (much easier to remove than the previous ones).

18. Also, on the right side of the airbag underneath, there is another clip shown above. Just pull it down with a flathead and it comes off real easily.

19. The final two clips are located behind the dash toward the upper part of the center console (one on each side). Above is a picture of the passenger side. Push the button on the clip toward the center of the dash (i.e. to the left for the passenger’s side and the right for the driver’s side). This will allow you to pop the clips loose from the dash.

20. Remove the black plastic that surrounds the ignition that is held together by two screws. If you turn the steering wheel to each side, the screws become visible. Then, remove the windshield wiper controls and blinker controls by simply pushing a flathead where the arrow points in the picture above (it's sideways, so turn the picture clockwise) and popping it out.

21. Pull the dash off!

If you guys find any mistakes or anything I should add, let me know.

Why did you print and scan the pictures rather than just saving them?

You're write ups are always good!

Thanks!

I had printed the write up out to use it while I work inside the car, but I never thought the write up online would get lost so I never bothered saving the pictures. Now that the write up is nowhere to be found, those are the only way to get the pictures from the original write up. If I were to take my dash off again sometime in the future, I would definitely take more/better pictures

Does anyone know if there is an easier way of just popping the vents out to be replaced or if I have to take the whole dash apart to get to them?
