ECU.. fact or fiction?

Hey guys i don't really know very much at all about ECUs.. and my friend was telling me about one that was in his friend's car that would allow him to rev his engine to some crazy RPMs (over 8k rpms?).. and he said that when his car is at a stop.. if he taps the gas once.. the engine will begin to rev up over and over until he hits the gas.. giving extra acceleration.

i don't know if any of this is fact or what. can someone tell me if this is a capability of an ECU? If not, is there anything else that could do this? And last thing.. what other stuff do ECUs do?

wtf? That sounds absurd. The rest is true. You can use a ppiggy back or standalone unit to chage the rev limit.

its calld a stun box/stutter box. had one in my old, awd vr4. it holds ur rpm's at a desired rpm but sounds like your redlining during a launch.
here is a demonstration from both cars....

And i assume revving to those numbers.. 9-10k rpms? would be baaad for your engine?

Unless his engine is built, yes reving that high would be very bad

A stutter box is a separate unit, nothing to do with the ECU.

Stutter box is often referred to as a 2-step rev limiter. It sets your rev limiter to a desired rpm for launching. That way your launches are always at the exact same rpm.

2-step is a formula of timing retard and an overly-rich induced condition. The purpose is to reduce the lag (spool-up time) on turbocharged cars or more specifically larger turbo's such as Sergey's gargantuan! It allow them to create boost just revving. You can see it in the WRC and drag racing.

Waste of money without the proper mods.

It's not a waste of money, considering it comes standard on most standalones (Hydra, AEM, etc)

I believe he meant a waste of money unless your making big boost and big power.
