Tuan's Wheel Rash Repair Guide.

When my celica was my daily driver about a year ago I had to commute to school every day. The school had a horrible parking system and that forced me to parallel park almost every day. The first few times I parked resulted in numerous curb rash. I bought it to the local wheel repair shop and it was quite expensive to repair. I had it done a few times , but then after awhile I didn

Thanks guys, the hardest part is finding the proper paint, imo.

I thought you would like it woody. Where any of your wheels messed up in the wreck?

I don't understand what kind of spray paint you are using to match the polished lip of the rim? I have one rim that got all f'd up by a shop that was supposed to be doing body work on my car. I'd like to know how to do this properly but I don't see how you can just spray paint it after you sand it down, the only thing you have pictured is primer.

Good thread. I don't think it's easy to find matching color for a polished metal. The Paint prepared by the local body shop does n't come in spray can. You need an air brush for that. The Q is after all is it worth to do it yourself ? BTW can you show us your finished result. Thks

It isnt a specific brand, the can is a generic spray can with paint mixed by an auto body shop. I will get you the paint code that I found matches wost with polished metal.

Sure. You can rattle can the paint but I recommend clearing with a paint gun. I think its worth it since the wheel shops charge and insane amount.

It's pretty much the same concept, except you will have a harder time finding a paint that will blend in. What color are you working with?

Finally was able to take some pictures.

No trace of it at all, you have to be up extremely close to notice.

Dan, I'll get you the paint code. Its "mystic silver" off the volvo.

too late i gave my rims to a shop in tampa. 75 a rim and they look simply amazing. best money i could have spent. however these rims (not current ones) have a much large solid curved mirror surface so would have been more noticeable

however for rims that have the lip like the ones u fixed and my tenzo's this is ideal, cheap and as u can see from his pics, works really well

Supplies you’ll need:
Paint Thinner
Paint
Cloth Rags
Scratch filler Primer
240, 400, 600 grit sandpaper
Sanding block, or a piece of wood
Bondo spot putty
Painters tape and some paper bags

The g-games wheel that I am repairing has a polished lip on it so I had to find a paint code that looks similar. If you are trying to repair bronze, gold, or any other color go to your local auto body shop and have them mix something similar. For reference Im using mystic silver off the BMW.

Step 1: Prep and mask
Get some soap and wash of the wheel, get the grime and dirt off. Mask off tall but the damaged part of the wheel. This step is very important. Use the paint thinner to clean the damaged area. Dampen the rag and thoroughly clean the rash. You are essentially taking off the clear, wax, polish. You don’t want any off that stuff on the wheel because it will hinder proper adhesion. Don’t get in too deep, you don’t want the paint thinner on any other part of the wheel. Also note that we only want to sand and paint the area only immediate around the damage.

2. Sand and Putty
Remember to get the tape behind the wheel . First, sand the rash with the 240 grit sand paper, create nice feather. Next wipe some spot putty on. You have to let the putty properly cure before you move on. It’ll will appear dry after a few minutes but let it sit for around 20 minutes. If you are in a fairly warm place like socal, it may cure in 10 minutes, but its getting pretty cold in WA so I gave it more time to dry. Now sand it with the 400 grit, until most of the excess putty is gone

3. Fine sanding
Get your 600 grit sandpaper out and sand the area some more. Wrap it around a sanding block or a piece of wood. This will apply even pressure, do not just use your hands, this will ruin the smooth surface. Sand until the surface is smooth. Run your finger across it to check if its feels and looks nice and even.

4. Primer (and more masking)
If you didn’t take the wheel off your car you will have to mask your car, so that the paint doesn’t get on anything else. You cant clay bar paint off so I suggest masking the whole car if you can. I used a scratch filler primer. If there is over spray and it gets on the other part of the wheel(we only want to primer the repair area!!), get a clean rag and paint thinner and gently wipe it off, you want to do it fast so that it doesn’t dry. Now sand the area with 400 and then 600 grit sandpaper.

5. Painting
Shake your can of paint for atleast a minute. Make sure its fairly warm outside or the paint wont adhere properly. Hold it about 5 or 6 inches away and spray. Hold the trigger down make a pass and release. Don’t let go of the trigger in between passes. Make sure you are familiar with painting with a paint can. Practice on a piece of newspaper. I found that 3-4 coats should be enough, but you can apply as many as it will take for it to match the rest of the wheel.

You should be done after this step. You can shoot some clear on it but it depends on the type of wheel you are working with. Let it dry overnight so that the clear doesnt lift the paint. Make sure you clean the area between steps so that little dust and sand particles don’t get stuck.
