dc-sports vs. stock header *dyno and vid*

I bought this dc-sport header for $130 about 2 months ago and finally decided to mount it just to see how it is. I know there is a lot of fuzz that this header isn’t all that great, that it produces no power and that it even makes our cars (2zz) loose power on some point of the power band. I also decided to port it my self just to make sure I could get the most of it. Putting it on took me like 3 hours… The worst part was taking of the 2 bolts on the bottom of the factory header! I just couldn’t get a wrench to fit and didn’t have the right space to torque it loose, my hands are kind of big and it was a pain in the a$$. The other difficult part was getting the stock header out of there but after a couple of minutes of twisting and trying I got it out the top right side of the car (if you stand in front of it). My car has 74,000 miles on it! I’ve read a lot of threads saying a new gasket is needed if the car has a lot of miles… Well I just wasted $25 on a new one, because my old one was perfect, just a little rusted but nothing a little sand paper can't fix… I also read somewhere the tubing was the same size, But i did notice the dc-sports tubing is a little bit larger than stock.
Here are some pictures. I thought my car had the air injection and sensors attached to it but it didn’t. So i guess no check engine light for me...

Before porting

after...

I had to weld a lower bracket support because the dc-sport doesnt come with one

The dc seems to have less curves throught the tubes, the tubes are bigger also
I could barely fit 2 fingers inside the stock headers holes, due to the bottle neck and excesive material it has in the openings.

difference

I can tell the car isn’t loud at low rpm; Lift is a little louder but not that much. The car definitely feels looser at +2000 rpm and definitely got some more horsepower at +6000 hp. Not 10 or 15 but I would say at least 4-6hp.

My recommendations… if you are going to but it new, it’s a little expensive for what it is, I suggest porting your stock or going PPE (from what I’ve seen in dyno results) but if you can get the DC sports header used for $100 bucks or so, GO for it! I’ve seen many people here selling it for that. I’m going to port my stock header sometime next week and swap them again just to compare the difference and dynos. I do plan on going to the dyno soon to prove if im wrong. I have never seen a dc-sport header dyno before only one someone got in an email from them some time ago, and some people argued it was fake, so ill do that soon. I'll keep everyone posted

this is the dyno from dc sports...

I am originally from matrixowners.com and 9thgencorolla.com , but I thought I should share this with you guys since we share the same engine!

special thanks to Redliner9k for helping me out tonight...

I just got back from the dyno and here is the dyno sheet and video. My results = 173.65whp and 124.70 tq.

my modds once again are = trd cai, ported dc-sports header and 2.5'' catback exhaust

i can garauntee the original dyno from dc sports is not a fake. I was there when they dynoed it using my car but the way they showed such high gains was like almost all manufacturers they dynoed a stock motor, then added only their header and redynoed. showed about a 10whp gain if i remember correct. once the intake and exhaust were added, it lost a tad bit of power in certain areas and didnt gain anything. once i added the power fc it lost tons of power all over and i didnt feel that it warranted spending the time and $$ to completely re-tune the car for it.

I never did get around to testing it after porting it.

and yes, outa all the different designs they tested, even though tis one didnt make the most power, it was the easiest for them to make so they stuck with it. it's basically stock design cleaned up with larger diameter pipes.

Good call on the DIY porting. Great numbers for a DC. Hopefully the welds don't crack.

Your gains are probably coming from the larger diameter primaries. The thing I really dislike about the DC header is that the primaries are not equal length. That's why they appear to have less bends.

Thanks! I saw your post on the ported stock headers and it really helped me a lot! Thanks for posting that. I am porting my stock header tomorrow to compare results.

Just FYI - unless you also port the collector on the stocker the results are not nearly the same. Unfortunately porting the collector is a b*tch.

You guys have small front plates. Thats awsome. They make us have full sized front plates over here which invariably blocks airflow.

lol! the front plate is a fake! its a poor imitation of a japanese plate ( I know!, I know! the real ones are white and full size)... haha! its kindof a trend here so I just went with the flow...

I did port the collector as well and YES it is a bi+ch! to drill doesnt seem to reach... so what I did was use a very small diameter bronze pipe tubing and welded the grinder piece at the end, it gave me about 6'' more inches of reach so that helped a bit, ill post pics of it when i get home

Nice and clean custom exhaust setup!

In Quebec/Canada, there is no plate in the front

But there is *&^ snow. I'd take the plate instead.

I'm following this thread closely. If the ported DC header makes more power than a stock ported header, I'm gonna have a new project on my celi!

I just got back from the dyno and here is the dyno sheet and video. My results = 173.65whp and 124.70 tq.

I made 173.93hp/123.84tq on my ported stock header w/ a cai and 2.5" catback exhaust. I have a '03 xrs as well. So like (+/-)0.28hp\(+/-)0.86tq difference depending on how you look at it.

Not too much of a difference. Just down time if your having your header ported by someone else. If you do it yourself i'm sure a day would do for the whole process.

I know I said I would post the vs. ported stock header results but ive been in finals and I dont have time at all. I did started porting the stock header! OMG! that material is very hard and takes a lot of time, that thing just wont grind lol!, it anoying! Porting the dc's only took me like 2 hours. Once I finish with finals Ill get back to it, dyno it and post results. Thanks for the comments!
