PFITZNER Performance Gearboxes Group Buy for 7th Gen Celica!!!

Watch this if unfamiliar with PPG:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fA94Sxiu4c
I contacted them asking them to produce a gearbox for our 7th Generation Celica. Their initial response was
"We have in the past made a GT4 Celica set, but would most likely have to manufacture some custom componentry for later model Celica’s. For a customized gearset we usually charge between $7000 - $11000, and at the current time have a wait list of 4-6 months, if someone were to place an order of this type we would look at doing a set for them and then listing these gearsets for general sale. Do you know someone that would commit to this?"
Later replying:
"The initial research, development and manufacture would place the price at $7k - $10k, often after this initial set is completed we can set the price lower. But unfortunately the cost would still not be below $5k. The only way I can see that the price can get below $5k is a group buy of 15-20 sets at one time.."
If there are any other members interested in this let me know so I can give them a count and see what kind of estimate we can get. I will wait to give them the count until after they get back from the SEMA SHOW in Las Vegas from the 31/10/09 - 11/11/09. By giving me a count does not obligate you in any way to this purchase. It gives me a ball park number I can relay back to PPG for an estimate group buy amount$.

As a less expensive option, you guys could buy the E153 project from Stafford / Smaay / Ronin, get his CNC guy to make up the parts and I can have my fabricator in town here weld them.

Isn't that around $5k as well though and a lot of trouble?

what would the trans come with? just the case and gears???
the E153 comes with axels i think.
no point on having a nice 5k trans when the next weak factor comes into play.
you start to snap axels.

If the current breed of celica owner cannot afford a wonderful intake manifold which has been proven to be the best single n/a mod for the car at roughtly $1400...how can you imagine that 15-20 people would cough up around 5k for a transmission that most of which haven't even got enough power to even trouble the damn thing, lol.

I would definitely be interested in a short ratio box if we can get it for around 4-5k range.

Well that rules you out. This was aimed at owners with big power applications.

I'm pretty sure it comes with machined case, gears, axels and mounts. I'm just trying to put more options on the table. To each their own. The tranny issue for our car only has these two as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The PPG gearsets come with the gearsets, you need to assemble them into your existing case etc.

You could also contact PAR Engineering. They've previously done gearsets for both the 5 and 6 speed Toyota C series boxes.

Maybe you can post this up on the spyderchat and lotustalk forums and get a few more potentially interested people to join in on the group buy?

This is a joke a company down under wanting customers to pay for their R$D and no real testing........... "If you build it they will come "

If you need their money for R$D you don't have faith in your product...

I may be able to chat with them further if need be, I live in Sydney, Australia so if you need my assistance PM me!

We are really lacking in the gear box area and need an affordable solution, with and option for circuit or drag boxs.

Is this the competition talking? (E153) We really don't have room for that with having only so little options. No disrespect ronin I know you've done a lot.

No competition from me, I'm not sellin anything never did..... My point is if these guys want to open up a new market with the Celica and Lotus boys why should the customer pay for the R$D...Good for them bad for the consumer if their R$D goes belly up as I think it will....

If a company sells proper gears they should put them on the shelf and guys will buy them....... If they need your money to do the R$D...run away

what are we getting for 7 to 11 thousand dollars? Are we talking straight cut dog box transmissions or just recut gears for the stock shafts? Theres a big cost difference between the two.

for $7000 you usually get a new mainshaft and the gears from PPG for "custom" gearsets like this. You re-use your original selectors, case, diff etc.

For some boxes they also produce billet selectors etc if the stock parts are prone to breaking (eg, WRX). The PAR 5-speed C series straight cut dog engagement gear sets are ~$5000AUD. Add a bit more for the 6-speed version.

If you really think about it. How many will buy them? Seriously..

How many company have produce products and spent the money on R&D on the celica and get nothing or very little in return? There have been plenty, and the majority of 2zz guys are too cheap (just look at how many people are buying intake manifold, most are probably waiting for cheap copies), and the company end up losing money and closing up shop. The market for 2zz is small, and when it comes to gears it's even smaller.

It's a business afterall, they're there to make profit. And I'm sure they cbf opening a market for us because there is no market. We are actually looking for them for help, not the other way around.

I can understand, your not from Australia so you would have never heard of any of these guys before. But around here, if your in the racing scene and around big hp cars, you would know the quality product they make.

Before you go shut down every little bit of hope on anything, take a quick look at their website, they do make many products for proper peformance cars.

BTW... I think this should be done for the 5sp box. It will be cheaper, and the high hp car will benifit from longer gear ratios.

i tried finding enough people to get a good deal on a group buy for these gearboxes but had no luck... Smaay is now working on my E153.
