Hey guys need some advise on a engine swap.

My 1zz engine is shot. Lots of oil mixing with coolant in the motor and radiator.

I have a 2001 celica gen 7

I'm looking at doing a engine swap .

Forget budget when replying to this thread. I want to know what engines you would reccomend replacing the current one with.

I cannot get another 1zz- fe engine.

I have at my disposal

2zz -
3zz

1zz- JD ( not sure if its jd or JO ) came from corolla nze

i was thinking of just installing the 3zz. its the cheepest out of the lot

all of the above engines i have everythign needed to convert. brain harness axels etc etc.... would like to know from you guys what you reccomend. what to look out for. what problems i might get. Would i need a diffrent cooling system.

ANyone here have a 3zz in their car?

Actually it does, he's in the Caribbean and there was a 3zz motor made for certain asian countries. Pulled this from wikipedia:

The 3ZZ-FE is a 1.6 L (1598 cc) incarnation built in Japan. It is found in the Asian Toyota Corolla Altis which is available in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan and in the Toyota Corolla sedan sold in Sri Lanka. In South Africa the motor can be found in the RunX 160 and Corolla 160. The entire exterior design and chassis is the same as the American Corolla. Bore is 79.0 mm and the stroke is 81.5 mm. Max. output is 109 hp (81 kW) @ 6000 rpm. Max. torque is 110 lb/ft. of torque (150 Nm) @ 3800 rpm.

To the OP in answer to your question get a 2zzge if you can afford it.

You can convert a 3ZZ into a 1ZZ easily.

Please keep in mind you need to make sure engine control, fuel, ignition, etc is taken care of properly.

If your cylinder head from 1ZZ is in good condition I suggest to keep it as it has better flow characteristics and larger valves, plus intake camshaft is different (Celica and MR2 mk3 only, Corolla, Avensis, Corolla Verso, RAV4, and any other 1ZZ has the same head as on 3ZZ). 129HP versus 143 HP for 1ZZ.
If it's shot as well then get the pistons, rods, crankshaft, all the bearings from 1ZZ and put into 3ZZ. Keep an eye on the 3rd ring on the 1ZZ pistons, your engine is from the oil eater series.

I had a 3ZZ, and I sourced a conventional (non Celica and MR2) 129HP 1ZZ, we changed internals as my donor 1ZZ originally intended for simple swap was a 2003 unit with oil issues also.

My final unit:
- complete block and head from 3ZZ
- 1ZZ pistons, 1ZZ rods, 1ZZ crankshaft, with ALL the original bearings
- replaced 3rd piston rings for the new revised 2004+ variant

mozso thanks a lot.
The head on my 1zz is really bad.... cant re use it

its a nice idea of taking the 1zz parts and putting it in the 3zz. right now i need my car... I will install the 3zz now and buy another 3zz and do exactly what you did. !!! ( maybe a head and block alone )

Thanks for your great suggestion

Yes you are correct. I am from the Caribbean.. engines here are realyyyyyy cheep. I can get almost any engine for this car. The question really is which one to install...

Yes downgrading to 3ZZ doesn't make sense at all. Especially from a 1ZZ Celica. Why do you want to buy another 3ZZ? I don't get it.

If the block is shot and any of: crank, pistons, rods, bearings are not 100% and you do not update your 3rd piston rings, then there is no way it will work. Get a factory service manual without that you cannot measure clearences, etc.

Smaay has more than enough experience in building and re-building. I would advise to talk to him, but only when you have real details.
